The 7 Deadly Sins of Resume Design

The website LiveClever has a post in which they outline what they feel are the worst offenses in designing your resume.

They are as follows:

  1. Fancy “resumé” paper
  2. Times New Roman
  3. Teeny tiny font size
  4. Grey text
  5. Excessive decoration
  6. Weird paper size
  7. Horizontal format

I mostly agree with these. The first one notes that it’s probably not effective to use the linen or parchment “resume” paper that you might see at an office supply store. They do say you might use a cream paper or something a little heavier than plain copy paper. I’ve used the expensive paper in the past, and I think it’s not as deadly a sin as the others here. When going through a stack of resumes, a person is going to notice one that “feels” different from the others, and it might just warrant it a closer look.
